Heard of your trip from Charlie Mott. Will be following your progress via the Internet. Sorry to hear that the weather hasn't been more favorable to this point - it has been an unusually cool/damp May/June here this year. Good Luck on the rest of your trip. |

hi there, this is maura's cousin brett just sending along a note to say hi and see how things are going. i am very jealous of a trip like the one you are on but one day hope to do a multi week trip. i had planned and started a canoe trip from grand portage to lake winnipeg (following your route) but had to pull out after three days from exhaustion and equipment failure. but one day i will go back and do it. i love how you are tying it into the routes that the voyageurs took. i am fascinated by that part of canada;s history.anyways i hope you are having great weather and enjoying yourselfs. take care brett |
Congratulations girls on your next maybe final leg of the journey. We join you as friends of Maura and will watch, pray and envy your experiences. The Ouellette family |

I'm following your adventures with interest. Seems like a great but exhausting way to spend a few summers; and what stories! I ran into some friends of yours while kayaking on the Sturgeon-weir (just downstream of Maligne Lake). A 'CPAWS' group was 25 days into their trek from Prince Albert? to Ottawa. Your names came up[ in the conversation: Graham, Laura, Sarah and Ben say 'hello'. I'm enjoying the updates on your web site. Charlie Mott |

Erin: hope you are not losing too much weight with all that paddling and and hard work.Wiky Reserve was exciting and LOTS of challenges, (Bill still sleeping--12 year old boys are VERY busy--good and badbad--details later)Ladies group went well, 20 plus every day, but but with only 2 teen babysitters, needed more help,so my friend DoDonna ended up "sitting" and I will still by myself-craziness.But,no child was lost, and Moms appreciated a morning free-felt ththat I was accepted as a friend-so many problems-such evil inthat community-keep your journal writing going-don't forget thedetails that you can share when you return.God speed.love ANT JudyJudy |

Maura, hope all continues to be well for you and Erin. You'll be pleased to know that all 8 of us were able to summit Mt. Ranier, and that Sheila and I were also able to summit Mt. Baker ( mostly by ourselves). each summit day was 8 to 81/2 hours ascent and 4 to 41/2 hours descent - each day was exhausting and exhilerating and we were very pleased to be able to do it together and with others. We will be at Strawberry Island Aug 4 to 6, so look forward to seeing you the night of the 6th. I am writing from Moscow, Idaho , staying with friends of my folks, Warren and Pauli Owens. They have enjoyed reading your web page - as have we. Much love and prayers for safety and enjoyment. Peace and love, Mum and Dad |
Dear Maura, We hope your trip is still going well and that you are enjoying each moment. You will be pleased to know that all 8 of us summited Mt. Ranier and that we (Sheila and I) summited Mt. Baker, after the others had to leave due to Air Canada uncertainty. The ascents were each 8 to 8 1/2 hours, and the descents about 4 to 5 hours. Each time was very tiring and we were pleased to be able to accomplish it. We hiked the West Coast TRail for 1 day, boated in Puget Sound for a day, and have bOur best to Erin; have fun, stay safe and healthy and we will see you the night of the 6th when we return from Strawberry island and the former Basilians' reunion. We are off to Yellowstone National Park tomorrow. Peace and love, Mum and Dad. |
Hey Ladies!!!We finally were able to thoroughly browse your site- awesome adventures you're having! We think of you all the time, especially when we stop in places where the folks tell us stories of the women who paddled through before us. We think of you when we eat the Bombay curry or the Gado gado (yummy, yummy) and wonder if you guys are doing the same. We can't wait to meet Maura- have all of us connect in the fall and share stories and compare muscles...I hope your spirits are high and the wind stays at your back. Great to be living a dream, isn't it?!thinking of you lots, the boreal paddlerswww.cpaws.org/boreal2000 |

My hero,Maura. I think about you and Erin every day. Uncle John and I thought about being immersed in water as we travelled through the scourging dessert lands of Utah and Nevada on our way to the family reunionon Vancouver Is. Hopefully, your father will have better photos than we doof WHALES entertaining us while we stopped for lunch, as we hiked the Pacific coast. Can't believe the extensive beauty of this continent; andyou guys get to see wilderness beauty that very few us will get the privelege to experience. Treasure every moment - the tough and the fun.Maura - I can hear you laughing and see you smiling!Congratulations to you Mom and Dad on their great double climb ! |

Erin,Every time I pop in the Essential Leo Kottke CD at work I recall your presentation and drift off to Canoe Expo as well as think about my Mom and Dad's encounter with Alzheimer's. Thanks again for the paddling effort and the cause. Many of us have great pictures and memories but your whole trip story at Canoe Expo, especially the focus upon the mind and health, have stuck with me. Hi out there,I signed up for the mailing list and so got notice today that you'd done another journal entry. How cool to be able to read it the same day you wrote it. I'm at the computer working on the first draft of my thesis proposal (which is going great I'm very excited about it) but now I'll be thinking of mountains and the sounds of paddles in the water! I sent a card for you to your Dad's the other day. Take care of each other - can't wait to see the incredible pictures.Kathy |
Pam, we have just come back from a wonderful dinner with your parents at their cottage. It was a lovely sunny day but the temperature is cool. Of course it was a very quiet, sedate dinner!!We will be sad to see them leave. We had a great dinner of hamburgers, salads and peach pie and it was all great fun. Just read your August 17 update with great interest. You are certainly moving along - what an incredible journey. We think of you often. The scenery must be spectacular. All the family home this weekend but it was too cold to go to the island. Your parents joined us for a great gathering though a week ago on Sunday - it was the only sunny warm Sunday we have had all summer. The Cuthbert wedding on Saturday was great fun - 180 guests. Speeches etc. were excellent. All the best, Sarah Jane |

Yesterday, 28 November 2000, I ejoyed listening to your slide-show presentation at the MEC store in Toronto. I was impressed! I admire your resilience, dedication, and courage in doing what you want to do and doing it well. As I said after the show, you have some very fine pictures in your collection and you show a good eye for images. And your website is well-designed, informative, and just plain fun to read. Congratulations! It's paddlers like you that make me proud to be a wilderness canoeist. If you send me your snail-mail address, I'll send you a copy of the newsletter Nastawgan that I edit and produce for the Wilderness Canoe Association. Good luck. |
